THE PROBLEM

Working expats seek to boost productivity by reducing time-consuming errands

Expats, often working entrepreneurs, face challenges with daily tasks in a foreign country. To optimize productivity, they need personalized assistance due to time constraints and lack of local knowledge. However, they encounter several issues:

No centralized platform to find local errand runners

Limited familiarity with local practices

Search engine results that primary cater to locals

Language barriers in non-English speaking countries

Lack of comprehensive information online

Bureaucratic obstacles (visa, banking, gov processes, etc.)

❓How might we assist expats to navigate errands seamlessly in a foreign country ❓

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Personalized & location-based recommendations

Save users’ time and effort by offering “Popular errands around you”

Providing features that cater to users’ preferences and needs

Create an errand and search runners seamlessly

Quick and easy input field

With the help of AI, keywords used by users will sync with the expertise of local runners

Seamless date, time, and location input to specify when and where the errand needs to be done

Directly connect with local runners

Voice recording to save users time and effort in typing long messages, especially for conveying detailed errand information or instructions.

Automatic integrated translation within the chat for a seamless global communication

Voice & video call to have immediate direct conversations

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

2 direct competitions, 1 indirect competition

I looked at 3 potential competing companies which consist of 2 direct competitions and 1 indirect competition. The majority of the features between competitors were very similar, however the main differences that I noticed are:

No in-app calling vs in-app calling

Hardly accessible vs easily accessible

General search vs narrowed down search

Too many screens vs simplified interaction

Limited payment method vs variety payment method

Inconsistent profile picture vs consistent profile picture style

RESEARCH METHOD & FINDINGS

Survey & User Interview

I chose surveys and user interviews for my research. Surveys gather broad information from many participants about user needs, preferences, and pain points. Follow-up user interviews provide deeper insights based on survey responses. Participation in interviews is optional; interested participants can leave their email at the end of the survey.

RESEARCH GOALS

To understand the needs and challenges of the target user group

Understand the needs and challenges faced by expats when it comes to running errands.

Assess local demand to determine which specific errands are most in demand by expats.

Explore the potential market demand for such a service among the target user group

USER INTERVIEW MAIN TAKEAWAYS

It’s not that the errands are difficult to do, but rather unnecessarily time-consuming to complete

I interviewed 5 expats for this project. They find errands not difficult but unnecessarily time-consuming, leading to a shared desire for a local personal assistant. Due to limited and expensive options, they rely on word-of-mouth recommendations for reliable service providers. Only 4 participants agreed to have their photos taken.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. ️Be aware of scope creep

Define project goals and document every step from the beginning of the project.

  1. Don’t be afraid of being wrong!

Stop trying to achieve perfectionism.

  1. Asking the right questions in a user interview is very important

Don’t ask about what the user wants in the app you’re building, they don’t know what you’re trying to build.
